The No Woe Zone

The Book of Life

Benjamin Franklin wrote, "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Jesus told us to pay our taxes [Matthew 22:15-22], so we know the right choice to make there. Pay your taxes.

Franklin was writing about the first death, when our physical body dies. But our spirit or soul in us lives on. What happens to our soul after we die? For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. [Romans 6:23]

Isn't it great that the part of us that lives forever can get a free pass to heaven? When Jesus died on the cross He paid the price for our sins. It's like He paid our taxes for us. All we have to do is ask God to forgive us. We can use the ABC method below.

Let's take a look at the future. After Jesus returns and the end of this world there will be a judgment, like a report card, of the souls of everyone who has ever, ever lived. This is known as the Great White Throne Judgment. You're in or you're out!

The good guys get to live in a new heaven and earth where everything is nice and we never die. Way to go!

The bad guys get tossed in the Lake of Fire, which some call Hell. What a downer!

Who are the good guys who get to live in the new heaven and earth? Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. [Revelation 21:27] Remember, Jesus is the Lamb of God, and yes we do want our name to be written in His Book of Life. Then we can spend forever with Jesus and our good friends in this wonderful new world.

We need to learn more about the Book of Life. Our God is a loving God, and everyone's name was written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world (except those who will worship a future false Jesus, or Anti-Christ). It is written of God: Your eyes have seen my unformed substance and in your book were all written. [Psalm 139:16] That means our name was written in His Book of Life before we were born. Your name is in the Book of Life right now.

That sounds like a good start. But, wait. Who are these bad guys throughout history who after the Great White Throne Judgment get tossed in the Lake of Fire? Weren't their names written in the Book of Life from the beginning? Yes, but after they died their names were erased, or blotted out. Ouch!

In the words of Jesus: He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. [Revelation 3:5]

What is the first thing to do to make sure your name stays in the Book of Life? Become a Christian by declaring your faith in Jesus Christ by the ABC's. It's between you and God.

A - Admit that you are a sinner in need of God. You need to know: all have sinned and continue to fall short of God's glory. [Romans 3:23] This means that sometimes we all make bad choices. The important thing is to admit these errors to God and not blame others. Take responsibility for your mistakes.

B - Believe that Jesus died and rose again for your sins. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. [Acts 16:31]

C - Confess Jesus as Lord of your life. If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. [Romans 10:9] Say it out loud, right now.

What happens if you are not ready for the ABC's? You can keep this in mind and remember it later before death. When Jesus was nailed to the cross there were two criminals also being crucified. The first criminal made fun of Jesus. The second criminal admitted he was justly suffering for his bad choices, but that Jesus had done nothing wrong. Then he believed and confessed by saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” And He (Jesus) said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” [Luke 23:42-43]

The first criminal's name was erased from the Book of Life after he died, and he will be tossed in the Lake of Fire. The second criminal's name is still in the Book of Life, and he will be with Jesus in the new heaven and earth. Will you get to meet that second criminal and ask him about his life?

What if a person dies in an accident or terrorist attack before they do the ABC's? There was no time to do it. Do you think those people's names will be erased? Yes they will.

What if a person tries to live a good life, but he does not believe in Jesus? He will tell you that he does not commit crimes, beat his children, or do other bad things, and pays his taxes. He may say that if there is a loving God, then God still loves him. He later dies peaceably with a smile on his face, but he never did the ABC's.  Another downer! Jesus will sadly shake his head and erase the person's name.

You now know how to keep your name in the Lamb's Book of Life. Isn't it time to learn more about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ?

How about a bonus? Think about your name. Your last name is your father's and his father's last name. Your first name and middle names were given to your by your parents. How about a new name?

Jesus said: To him who overcomes, ... I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it. [Revelation 2:17]

When we are in the new heaven and earth we will have a new name given by our new father, Jesus. It will be written on a small white stone, or pebble, like the ones that were once used to vote. A black stone was for NO. A white stone was for YES.

The ABC's can get you that white stone and a new name for the new heaven and new earth. Yes, a new and improved life in the No Woe Zone that lasts forever. Amen!
